Nataraja Temple also known as the Chidambaram Temple

Nataraj Temple Complex, Chidambaram

Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Nataraja avatar, the Chidambaram Temple or the Nataraja Temple Complex, as it is officially called, is one of the finest specimens of the magic that faith, human creativity and nature can create in the form of sculpture and architecture.

Four lofty gopurams enclose the main temple in the four cardinal directions, covered with impressive relief work and sculpture.
The Nataraja temple itself is beautiful with several individual sections.
The ChitSabha or the hall of consciousness houses the images of Nataraja and Sivakami or Parvati and is the holiest of all.
The KanakSabha or the Golden Hall, the Nritta Sabha and the Deva Sabha are the other sections embellished with carved pillars and images of the deities.

The Sivakami Amman temple is also located within the complex.
The best time to visit the Chidambaram Temple is during the annual festivals of Arudra Darisanam when the deities are taken out in colorful processions.

Best time to visit
Throughout the year, especially February.
