The magnificent Golden Temple, in Amritsar
The Harmandir Sahib, known better as the Golden Temple, is probably the best maintained and beautiful places of worship in India.
Topped by a gold-plated dome in the shape of a lotus, the Harmandir Sahib is the holiest shrine for the Sikhs, as it contains the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the last Guru of the Sikhs.
The temple is built in pristine white marble, with intricate designs on the walls and floors of the entire complex.
The temple is located at the center of a lake called as Sarovar whose waters were called Amrit or nectar.
The city of Amritsar takes its name from this, literally meaning Holy Water.
The temple can be reached by four entrances.

The golden roof of the temple makes a fascinating spectacle especially during sunrise and sunset.

October-March is especially favorable, although the Golden Temple may be visited throughout the year.

By air
The international airport of Amritsar is located outside the city in Rajasansi. The Golden Temple is located at the center of the old city of Amritsar. Buses, taxis and private vehicles can reach the temple from the airport within an hour and half.
By rail
Trains from all major cities of India halt at Amritsar.
By road
A good bus network connects Amritsar to rest of the state. Buses are also now operating between Amritsar and Chamba, Dalhousie and Dharamsala.
