Sun Temple Konark, in Orissa India
A beautiful tribute to the power of the Sun God, the Sun Temple of Konark has long been its biggest attraction.
Known as the Black Pagoda, due to the blackened color of the rock, the Sun temple was built in the 13th century.
Excavated in the 19th century, the temple still retains an aura of grandeur and mystique, even though several of its original structures are missing or destroyed.
Covered in some of the best architectural and sculptural styles witnessed in India, the Sun temple is a replica of the Sun God’s chariot with 24 gigantic wheels and drawn by seven horses.
The sheer magnitude of the structure makes one appreciate the technical expertise of the time. Tourists are advised to schedule their trip such that they can attend the annual Odisi dance festival that is held within the Natya Mandap of the temple.
